Orioles drop pair to Red Sox

SARASOTA -- The Red Sox used two strong pitching performances in sweeping a twin bill from the Orioles on Sunday at Twin Lakes Park.
The first game was the finish of Tuesday's suspended game. José Alvarez threw six innings of two-hit relief in a 3-2 win.
The Red Sox never trailed after scoring two first-inning runs. Ken Roque's two-out single to center field made it 3-0 in the fourth.
The Orioles got single runs in the eighth and ninth, but left the tying run at second.
In the second game, three Red Sox pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout in a 3-0 win in eight innings.
Victor Serrano's two-run single with one out snapped the scoreless tie. Serrano went 2-for-4 in each game.
Orioles starter Cole McCurry struck out 10 in seven innings, allowing five hits.
At the Lee County Complex in Fort Myers, the Pirates and Twins split two games.
In the opener, a completion of a suspended game from Tuesday, the Pirates took a 4-3 victory.
They broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning on an infield single by John Fitzpatrick that scored Caleb Fields.
Daniel Bomback and Victor Alvarez each had two hits for the Pirates.
The Twins scored all of their runs in the third inning of the second game for a 5-1 victory.
Yangervis Solarte led the Twins (2-for-3) Bomback was 2-for-2 for the Pirates.
Winning pitcher Liam Hendriks tossed six shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out 11.
The Twins (33-16) have a four-game lead over the Orioles with eight days left in the season.
