BRADENTON -- Kyle McPherson pitched six innings of three-hit ball to spark the Pirates to a 9-7 win over the Twins, Saturday at Pirate City.
The Twins made it interesting with a five-run ninth inning, capped by James Berersford's two-run single, but Edward Cordero got the final out for the save.
McPherson allowed two unearned runs and struck out four.
Ciro Rosero hit a two-run home run in the seventh. Tom Hagan and Josue Peley each had two hits for the Pirates, with Hagan driving in two runs.
At the Red Sox Complex in Fort Myers, the Red Sox pulled out a sluggish 3-1 win over the Orioles in a game in which each team left 10 men on base.
Darren Blocker drew a bases-loaded walk to break a 1-all tie in the sixth. He doubled with one out in the eighth and scored on a Matt Cooney single.
Mitch Dening went 3-for-4 and drove in the first Red Sox run.
