Twins hang on; Orioles halt Red Sox

BRADENTON -- The Twins scored four unearned runs in the second inning and held on to beat the Pirates 8-7 Thursday at Pirate City.
Michael McCardell (1-0) allowed five runs on four hits and two walks in five innings for the Twins. He struck out six.
John Fitzpatrick hit two home runs and had a sacrifice fly to drive in five runs for the Pirates. The Pirates' Matt McCullen entered the game in the top of the third inning and limited the Twins to no runs on three hits over five innings.
Eddy Nunez (1-2) gave up eight runs -- four earned -- on six hits and two walks in two innings.
In Fort Myers, Raul Rivero pitched five innings and gave up five hits, two earned runs and struck out four and the Orioles defeated the Red Sox 8-3.
The Orioles' Elvin Polanco went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. DH Lee Ellis went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Oscar Tejeda went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Che-Hsuan Lin had a solo homer in the fifth for the Red Sox.
